Have you ever noticed the same ads popping up online?

Almost like they’re following you around?

Maybe you had a quick look on Google for a new phone or laptop, only to be bombarded with tech ads for the following week or so.

This stuff doesn’t happen by accident, it’s a very good marketing technique if you know how to do it properly.

The only thing is, most businesses use it very sloppily and only end up annoying those who see their repetitive ads.

However, if you do this correctly, it can be a super cost-effective secret weapon for your business. So, let’s get into the details.

What is it?

This technique is called retargeting.

When you run ads online, people will see them, and one of three things usually happens.

  1. They see the ad, aren’t interested, and scroll on

  1. They are interested, and they do whatever the ad intends for them to do

  1. They are interested but get caught in a bad moment, get distracted and move on only to forget about your ad

Retargeting is designed to make sure you get a hold of that 3rd guy before it’s too late and he finds someone else to solve his problems.

Especially in today's world, most people's attention spans are definitely not a strong point.

And that isn’t good for us when there are so many distractions out there that will draw a perfectly good lead's attention away from your stuff.

Understanding your perfect customer

Not only does retargeting get you more potentially missed business in the door, but it can also be used to avoid joining the dreaded price race where the guy who does it cheapest almost always wins.

First, we need to understand the ‘customer journey’ of our potential buyers.

That looks something like this:

Prospect becomes aware of a problem or need.

Prospect decides to do something about it.

Prospect looks up possible options and solutions.

Prospects picks an option and checks out different suppliers.

Prospects buys from a supplier.

When you run a normal, bog-standard ad, you’re almost always catching them at stage 5, which isn’t good at all and is the source for many low-quality leads who are only interested in your price.

But if you use retargeting properly, you can catch them at stage 3 and build a relationship with them that guarantees they buy from you when they reach stage 5.

Here’s what that could look like.

Where to start

You can choose to run an initial ad which grabs the prospect's attention and provides them with some free information about their current problem.

If you catch them while looking for possible solutions, you’ll easily get your foot in the door, but it doesn’t quite stop there.

People are always sceptical, as they should be.

They’re going to be asking themselves “Why has this guy given info to me for free? What’s he trying to do? Is he trying to sell me?

And the answer to this is simple.

Keep following up with new ads that provide them with new information about their problem.

Soon their sales guard will drop, and they will trust you more and more with each ad.

This is the reason why platforms like Meta are so powerful because they make doing this so easy.

Leads hotter than fire

Sooner or later, if you have been retargeting correctly, your prospect will reach stage 5.

And when they do, the first solution that comes to mind will be you.

You won’t even need to try and sell them by this point.

They already know you, and they already know that you’re good at what you do.

No need for sneaky sales tactics, trickery or hard closing.

It’s very difficult to get leads warmer than that with the same amount of work.

I’ll be talking more about this topic in the future, so for now, give retargeting a shot and try to find something that works for you.
