Many business owners make this mistake.

One that is very easy to fall into...

So, If you are not careful, you could end up doing it too.

It kills sales and leaves bank accounts empty.

Passion can be a great thing, but you need to be careful where you put it.

In this article, I am going to show you why being too passionate about your business will lead to its downfall.

Everyone does it

It’s not too uncommon to see people starting businesses around something that they are passionate about.

This goes especially for smaller local businesses.

Whether it stems from a hobby or trade, many smaller businesses are created by people with great interest in their service.

This can be a great thing for work ethic, people are motivated every day to show up and put the hours in.

However, there is one thing about this approach that kills businesses if you’re not careful.

You might care, but customers won’t

Just because the owner is head over heels for their service, doesn’t mean the same applies to their customers.

In these cases, it’s very common to see people losing sales due to at least one of two things:

  1. They expect customers to know as much as they do about their service.

  1. They expect customers to care as much as they do about their service.

A good example of this comes from a failed coffee shop in a village near Cambridge:

The owner loved coffee so much that he bought the best ingredients and machines he could afford.

He also refused to sell a coffee that “wasn’t perfect”, which led to many coffees being thrown out while serving customers.

The problem here is that his love for coffee cost unnecessary amounts of money serving people who walked in for just a coffee.

They don’t care about the special beans or the quality produced by the high-spec coffee machines.

They just want…coffee. That’s all.

Leave passion in the pudding

Being passionate about what you do can be great for keeping you motivated.

But it should never be a necessity.

If you think about it, there are some Chinese billionaires that produce concrete.

Do you think they are in love with concrete and can’t fall asleep at night without thinking about it..?

Of course not.

You should be thinking about your customers and how they see your service.

When you start doing that, selling becomes way easier and your business will skyrocket.

Just be careful

Whether you are looking to start a business or are already running one, consider this.

Take a moment to think about why you chose your business model and how you hold yourself in front of your potential customers.

If it’s all about how much you care about what you do and this and that…

Make sure you’re not making some of the mistakes discussed in this article.

Because in the future, you may find yourself in a bit of trouble…

Talk soon,

Tommy
